But when it comes to realism, the problems of the drama begin to show. Right from episode one viewers look forward to finding out more about the perils and trials our heroes will face. Sometimes Ying Xiong’s reactions may off as too dramatic, but overall Mark Chao’s portrayal is decent, after all he was decent enough to have won the Golden Bell Awards for best leading actor. Viewers will quickly fall in love with the chemistry and contrasting personalities between Pi Zi and Ying Xiong. The story starts with a bang throwing our heroes right into the middle of action. Looking back, there were quite a few clues scattered around and elements of foreshadowing throughout the story so nothing is completely illogical, though some parts do come close.
Just when viewers think they understand what’s going on, the story throws a curveball leaving more questions then answers. The story is filled with plot twist after plot twist after plot twist. Plot twist buffet, that’s the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Black and White. Corruption and mystery is at every corner as our heroes try to find the truth behind their dark city.Įven in the moment of crisis, perfect hair is a must! Every character has been groomed to perfection just like non-reality. What seems like one simple case leads to unexpected findings with high stakes at hand and a devious plot that may threaten the future of Taiwan. Our unlikely police heroes playboy Pi Zi and righteous Ying Xiong find themselves caught up together after being told by their superiors to work together to solve a certain case.
Couple that with the action/thriller vibe that I got from doing an image search on Google lead me to selecting Black and White as my first foray into the realms of Asian dramas. Needless to say, what initially caught my eye about Black and White was the fact that it won the 44th Golden Bell Awards. Most dramas seemed to be geared towards adolescent teenage girls who live by and worship boy bands/ feminine looking male celebrities.

Most of the series were bombarded with pretty boys and innocent girls in some needlessly complex love triangle, square, or hexagon, which did not appeal to me one bit. Scouring through the web to find a suitable drama for a newbie like me was tough. I was never really into Taiwanese dramas until recently when I wanted to brush up on my Mandarin proficiency.
